Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union rallied twice to sweep a pair of non-conference baseball games from Allegheny (Pa.) 8-2, 9-8 Tuesday in the home opener at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders have now won six games in a row and stand at 9-2 on the season, while Allegheny is 0-2 on the season.
An unearned run in the second inning of game one gave Allegheny a 1-0 lead taht held until the fourth. In the fourth, the Raiders got a two-out, two-RBI double from freshman Derek Frye (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) to go ahead 2-0.
Mount Union extended the lead to 4-1 in the fifth as the Raiders started the frame with three-straight hits -- the last one of those a single from sophomore Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) that drove in two runs.
Mathis came up big again in the sixth as the score was 5-1 with the bases loaded he drilled a single to right field to score two more as part of a four-run frame that made it 8-1.
Allegheny scored a run and loaded the bases in the seventh before three-straight outs ended the game at 8-2.
Mathis drove in four runs on two hits and Frye drove in two runs on two hits to headline the Raiders at the plate, while on the mound sophomore Mike Horning (Avon/Avon) allowed only three hits over the first five innings to go to 2-0 on the season. Cory Douglass (Independence/Garfield Heights) pitched the final two innings for his second save of the season.
Allegheny again got an early lead in game two with three runs in the second inning, but Mount Union answerd in the bottom of the frame with three-straight hits with two outs to score three runs. Sophomore Kyle Osco (Uniontown/Lake) had an RBI double and fellow sophomore Ricky Olasz (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) drove in two with another double to tie the game.
The Raiders then scored three in the third on and RBI triple from sophomore Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak) and RBI singles from both sophomore Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Frye.
Two more runs in the fifth moved the lead to 8-3 on a drive to left field by sophomore C.J. Stotler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum).
Allegheny mounted another rally in the sixth and came all the way back taking advantage of a pair of Mount Union errors to plate five runs on just two hits and tie the game at 8-8.
In fact the Gators tried to take the lead in the seventh as they tried to execute a squeeze play with runners at first and third with no outs but the runner was out at the plate and the following hitter hit into a double play to end the threat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mathis began the inning with a single and after one out, he would advance all the way to third base on a wild pitch. Carlino then ended the game on a line drive to center field to score the run.
Mathis and Carlino each had three hits to pace an offense that had 12 hits.
Senior hurler Beau Smith (Frederick, Md./Frederick) allowed only two hits over the final 1.2 innings to pick up the win in relief and go to 3-0 on the season.
Mount Union plays Saturday against Westminster (Pa.) in a doubleheader that will be held at Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio.
