Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union freshman Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) had a two-out RBI double that drove in the winning run and nine pitchers combined to allow just a single run as the Purple Raiders beat Thiel, 2-1 in a non-conference game Sunday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
Mount Union scored a run in the first inning when lead off hitter Jimmy Dobran (Strongsville/Strongsville) reached on an error then stole second before Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) would drive him in on a single to center.
It was Mathis' 27th RBI of the season as he and Morino would each have two hits on the day.
Thiel (9-11) would tie the game in the top of the fourth as Wes Snyder would hit an RBI double but Mount Union would come right back in the bottom half of the inning as Morino's two-out double brought in Kyle Osco (Hartville/Lake) from second base.
The Tomcats would load the bases with two outs in the top of the eighth before pitcher Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) would force a ground out and end the threat.
Freshman Gino Ceriani (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) would pick up the win in relief while fellow freshman Brandon Bell (Strattonville, Pa./Clarion Limestone) would pitch 1-2-3 ninth in his first collegiate appearance to get the save.
Kyle Mohr allowed one earned run and six hits over 5.1 innings to take the loss for Thiel.
