Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The super sophomore combination of Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) led the Mount Union baseball team to a 1-0 and 10-6 sweep of John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference series Thursday in Alliance.
Carlino pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout to lead Mount Union to a 1-0 win in the opener while Mathis had four hits and drove in five runs in a 10-6 Purple Raider win in game two.
The sweep puts Mount Union at 19-8 overall and in a tie for second place in the OAC at 5-3 while John Carroll is now 10-13 and 3-5 in the OAC.
The Raiders lone run in the opener came in the second inning after a pair of one-out walks, freshman Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) drove in a run with a single.
Carlino then took over as he retired nine-straight from the third inning on until a lead-off single in the sixth. After that hit he put away the next three hitters in order.
John Carroll would get runners at the corners with two outs in the seventh before Carlino would get a ground-out for the victory.
Jimmy Spagna allowed just the one run on six hits and went the distance in the loss for the Blue Streaks
John Carroll would get on the board with a run in the first inning of game two, but Mount Union would come back with three runs in the bottom of the inning with Carlino and sophomore Steve Mitch (Sagamore Hills/Trinity) each with RBI singles.
The Blue Streaks would tie the game with two in the second but the Raiders would put three more on the board themselves in the second with the big hit coming on a two-RBI single from Mathis to extend the lead to 6-3.
John Carroll got a run back in the fourth but Mathis would drive in another run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-4. and he would then drive in two more runs with a single in the sixth to put the Raiders up 9-4.
The Streaks pushed a run across in the seventh and again Mount Union would match them with a run in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly RBI from sophomore Jimmy Dobran (Poland/Poland Seminary).
In the eighth, John Carroll would try to rally with a run but stranded two on base for the 10-6 final.
Aside from Mathis' heroics, Carlino drove in two runs and freshman Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) had three hits.
Sophomore Matt Murzynski (Mentor/Lake Catholic) went five innings and gave up seven hits but allowed just two earned runs to move to 6-1 on the season, while freshman Josh Pryor (Cortland/Lakeview) only gave up two hits over the final four innings for the save.
Andrew Doring gave up four runs in 1.1 innings to take the loss for John Carroll.
