Box Score 2 ADA, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team pulled off a pair of extra inning wins -- 10-4 in nine innings in game one and 7-5 in 10 innings in game two -- against Ohio Northern in an Ohio Athletic Conference series Monday in Ada.
OAC baseball series are supposed to be a 7-inning game one, followed by a 9-inning game two. By conference rule, if game one goes extra innings then game two becomes a 7-inning game.
None of that mattered Monday as sweep got the Purple Raiders (14-11 overall) back to even in conference play at 5-5 while Ohio Northern (12-15 overall) falls to 3-7 in the OAC.
Game one was tied going into the top of the ninth inning when Mount Union started the frame with an Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak) double then in the next at-bat, Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) drove him home for the go-ahead run.
After a single by Lee Grosscup (Green/Green) and Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) drew a walk to load the bases -- Jeff Bennett (Hartville/Lake) had a pinch hit two-RBI single to extend the lead to 7-4.
Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) then stepped to the plate and put the game out of reach as he blasted a three-run home run -- his first of the season -- to make the score 10-4.
Mohney finished with a career-best four RBI, Grosscup drove in three runs on three hits while Morino had four hits as the Raiders blasted a total of 17 hits for the game.
Ryan Sason (Mentor/Lake Catholic) came out of the pen and did not allow a hit over the final 4.0 innings to pick up his third win of the season. Tom Bekelesky (Akron/Firestone) started the game and allowed just one earned run over the first five innings.
In game two, Mount Union had leads of 1-0 in the second and 2-1 in the fourth before Ohio Northern took control with a three-run fourth to lead 4-2.
The Raiders clawed back within a run with a run in the sixth, 4-3, before Mohney led off the seventh with a double and would later score the tying run on a Grosscup sacrifice fly.
Mount Union would lead for a third time in the eighth as they took advantage of a Polar Bear error to push a run across and lead 5-4 but Ohio Northern would rally again to tie the game with a two-out RBI single from Cody Meyer.
It would stay that way again until the 10th inning when the Raiders loaded the bases and Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) came through with a two-run double to left field to put Mount Union up 7-5.
Ohio Northern put together another rally in the bottom of the 10th scoring a run and having the tying run on third base but Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) who came on to start the inning on the mound closed the door for his first save of the season.
Mount Union closer Brandon Bell (Strattonville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) scattered four hits over three innings in relief to get the win and he starter Matt Murzynski (Mentor/Lake Catholic) combined for seven strikeouts over the first nine innings.
The Raiders play again on Tuesday at 1 pm hosting Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
