Baseball: Mount Union Sweeps Capital; Raiders Have Won Four-Straight OAC Games

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union got a pair of strong pitching starts that turned into a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference wins as the Purple Raiders swept Capital, 2-1 and 4-1, Wednesday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

Mount Union (16-11) has now won four-straight and five of its last six OAC games and are 7-5 in conference play, while Capital falls to 14-14 overall and 4-8 in the OAC.

In the opener, Raider ace Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) hurled his league leading fourth complete game of the season as he went the distance on a five-hitter to pick up his sixth win of the season.

The game was tied at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh when pinch hitter Mitchell Lake (Orwell/Grand Valley) opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a fielding error, then was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt.  An intentional walk to Ricky Olasz (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) loaded the bases then Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) ended the game with a walk-off RBI single through the right side.

Capital took a 1-0 lead with a run pn three hits in the fourth inning but the Crusaders were held to just three hits the remainder of the game in a 4-1 Mount Union win.

Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) allowed those six hits over the first 7.1 innings of the game as he struck out four to get his first win of the season.

Ryan Sason (Mentor/Lake Catholic) got the final two outs in the eighth and Brandon Bell (Strattonville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.

Down 1-0 in the fourth, Mount Union got a one-out single from Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak), who then stole second and moved to third on a throwing error before eventuall coming home on a sacrifice fly from Lee Grosscup (Green/Green).  Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) gave the Raiders the lead with an RBI-single.

Mount Union tacked on another run in the fifth on a double from Olasz then made it 4-1 in the sixth when Jeff Bennett (Hartville/Lake) had a pinch hit RBI single.

Mount Union next plays Saturday at 1 pm in an Ohio Athletic Conference series at Heidelberg in Tiffin.
