Baseball Splits in Struthers With Westminster

STRUTHERS, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team split a pair of games with Westminster (Pa.) at Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio.  The Purple Raiders snapped a three-game skid with a 12-7 in the opener but fell 7-3 in game two.

After the split, Mount Union stands at 11-9 overall while Westminster is 10-13 overall.

Westminter scored six runs in the top half of the first inning of game one.  Mount Union came right back with five runs in the bottom of the first headlined by a pair of sacrifice fly RBI's from Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) and James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett) along with an RBI single from Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville).

The Titans extended their lead to 7-5 with a run in the third then Mount Union took the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning.  All four runs were driven in on consecutive at-bats as Lee Grossup (Green/Green) brought one home with a single, Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak) drove in two with a triple while Morino had an RBI double.

Mount Union took advantage of a pair of Westminster errors to tack on three more runs in the sixth for the 12-5 final.

Knott and Morino each drove in two runs while Jakubik and Mitchell Lake (Orwell/Grand Valley) each had two hits.

Gino Ceriani (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) battled through six innings and struck out eight to move to 2-0 on the season.

Westminster again got an early lead in game two with a run in the top of the first.

The Raiders again tied the game as Lake and Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) both reached on an error and Lake later scored on a past ball.

The Titans would score four unanswered with two in the second and one each in the third and fourth to take a 5-1 lead.

Mount Union got one of those runs back in the fourth with an run scoring single from Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf).

Westminster put two more runs on the board in the sixth on a two-run home run from Nick Reinthaler to lead 7-2.

Jakubik singled in a run in the bottom of the sixth but the rally ended there and the Titans won 7-3.

Kyle Borton alllowed only four hits over the first six innings and struck out five for the win.

Mount Union returns to Ohio Athletic Conference play Wednesday, April 10 at John Carroll at 1 pm.
