Football: Burke Matches Career High With 5 TD Passes as Mount Union Beats Marietta 84-14

Box Score

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Kevin Burke (Westlake/Lakewood St. Edward) matched his career-high with five touchdown passes as No. 1 ranked Mount Union set school and conference records beating Marietta, 84-14 Saturday night in an Ohio Athletic Conference football game at Mount Union Stadium.

The 84 points set a Mount Union team record and matched the conference record of 84 points in an OAC that Ohio Northern did against then OAC-member Hiram in 1993.  The 12 touchdowns also matched a conference record.

Mount Union (3-0, 2-0 OAC) extends the nation's longest winning streak to 18 games while winning its 76th consecutive regular season game and 69th straight home game.

Burke completed 22-of-30 passes for 336 yards with Brian Gainer (Tampa, Fla./Steinbrenner) and Jack Nicholls (Galion/Galion) each catching two touchdowns and Luc Meacham (Toldeo/Toledo Central Catholic) with another.

Gainer had his first 100-yard receving performance with 112 yards on seven catches while Nicholls had his second 100-yard plus day of the season with eight catches for 105 yards.

Germany Woods (Cleveland/Lakewood St. Edward) rushed for 76 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns in the first half while backup quarterback Taurice Scott (Alliance/Alliance) ran for 99 yards with two touchdowns in the second half.

Marietta (0-3, 0-2 OAC) took the opening kickoff and went 75 yards to take a 7-0 lead when Tim Conner ran it in from one yard out.

The Mount Union defense then took over and surrendered 93 yards the remainder of the first half.

The Purple Raider offense put up 49 points in the first half to lead 49-7. For the game, Mount Union rolled up 690 yards of offense.

Alex Kocheff (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and Joshua Scott (Hamilton/Fairfield) each had a team-high five tackles while Tom Lally (Fairview Park/Lakewood St. Edward) had 1.5 sacks to pace the Raider defense.

Mount Union goes on the road next week to play Ohio Northern at 1:30 pm Saturday, Oct. 5 at newly artifical turfed Dial-Roberson Stadium in Ada.
