Box Score 2 ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Mount Union's volleyball team, ranked No. 11 in the nation, swept a pair of matches 3-0 against both Hartwick (N.Y.) and Fredonia State (N.Y.) Friday at the Golden Flyer Invitational at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y.
The Purple Raiders are now 6-0 overall on the season and finish pool play at noon Saturday against Scranton (Pa.) before playing a final match later in the day. It is the best start to a season for the volleyball team since an 8-0 run to start the 2009 season.
In a 25-12, 25-11, 25-13 win over Hartwick, sophomore Kara Berger (Mentor/Mentor) led Mount Union in kills with eight as she was a key factor at the net with two solo blocks and three block assists. Senior Taylor Webb (Geneva/Geneva) and junior Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) each chipped in with six kills as well. Junior Sarah Schleich (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) had 15 assists as sophomore Abby Riffee (Mineral Ridge/Mineral Ridge) recorded three aces and junior Lauren Mastroine (Orrville/Orrville) had 13 digs for the Raiders
Mount Union was equally dominiant in a 25-12, 25-19, 25-11 win over Fredonia State as Webb led the attack with 11 kills with two solo blocks and one assist block. Schleich had 17 assists, Mastroine recorded 21 digs while junior Sara Brown (Willoughby/Willoughby South) registered two solo blocks and one block assist.
