Football: #3 Mount Union Posts Season-High 746 Yards in 58-17 Win Over Heidelberg

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- No. 3 ranked Mount Union posted a season-high 746 yards of offense as the Purple Raiders scored a 58-17 win over Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference football game Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.

The offense was paced by sophomore running back Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake), who ran for a career-high 184 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns and senior quarterback Kevin Burke (Westlake/Lakewood St. Edward), who threw for three scores on 295 yards passing and ran for two more on 89 yards rushing as Mount Union (6-0, 5-0 OAC) won its 89th consecutive regular season game and 78th straight home game.

Juniors Roman Namdar (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) and Taurice Scott (Alliance/Alliance) both had over 100 yards receiving as Namdar had a game-high 120 yards and a TD on five catches while Scott had 117 yards on five catches with a score.

Mount Union's defense held Heidelberg All-American running back Cartel Brooks was held to one yard on seven carries while quarterback Michael Mees threw for 293 yards but completed just 21-of-43 passes and was sacked a season-high six times.  

Along with the six sacks, the Raiders had a pair of interceptions and a forced a fumble.

Junior Nick Rodriguez (Macedonia/Nordonia) had six tackles and junior defensive end Tom Lally (Fairview Park/Lakewood St. Edward) five tackles, 4.0 for loss with three sacks.

Heidelberg (4-2, 3-2) went three-and-out on its opening possession and Mount Union struck on its first offensive play as Burke threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to Namdar.  The Raiders went up 14-0 with a touchdown on its next possession as Mitchell ran in from four yards out.

The Berg got on the board with 1:19 left in the first quarter on a 25-yard field goal by Stephen Smith.  

It was the first time this season an opponent had scored on Mount Union in the first half.

Heidelberg scored a touchdown early in the second quarter as Mees scrambled and hit Christian Dominguez on a 30-yard pass that made the score 14-10.

Mount Union then scored two more touchdowns before halftime -- a one-yard run by Burke then a 36-yard Burke TD pass to Scott -- while the Raider defense held Heidelberg to 59 yards over its three drives the rest of the half as the Raiders led 27-10 at the half.

The Raiders turned over the football on its opening drive of the second half and Heidelberg drove to the Mount Union two-yard line before Cody Pogorelc (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg) intercepted Mees in the end zone.

After that interception, Mount Union scored three touchdowns -- a Mitchell one-yard run, a Burke four-yard run and a 10-yard pass from Burke to Luc Meacham (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) -- and the defense held its own again as Heidelberg was held to 37 yards for the rest of the third quarter as Mount Union led 48-10.

In the fourth quarter, Mount Union got an Edward Ruhnke (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) 26-yard field goal and a five yard run from Germany Woods (Cleveland/Lakewood St. Edward) inbetween a Mees five-yard TD run.

Mount Union hosts Wilmington in an OAC game next Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1:30 pm at Mount Union Stadium.
