Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team swept a pair of games at Capital, 18-6 and 12-4, in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday in Columbus.
The sweep halted a four-game losing streak for the Purple Raiders and brings their record to 14-9 and 3-7 in the OAC while Capital falls to 11-14 and 2-8 in the conference.
Mount Union scored a season-high 18 runs in game one but the Crusaders hit back-to-back home runs to lead 4-1 in the first inning.
The Raiders came right back in the second inning sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs to retake the lead the 7-4. Freshman Nick Pitrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) making his first start of the season had a two-run single, Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) had a an RBI single and Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) had an RBI ground out in the inning.
Mount Union made it 8-4 with an RBI single from Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) in the third, then extended the margin to 10-4 with two more runs in the fifth as Mathis drove in another run on a ground out and Ricky Olasz (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) had an RBI single.
Capital got a run in the fifth and the Raiders came back with three in the sixth on a three-run home run from James Weber (Aubrun, Ind./Garrett) that brought the score to 13-5.
Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak) had an RBI single in the seventh to push the lead to 14-5 while the Crusaders scored a run in the eighth that made it 14-6.
The Raiders final four runs came in the ninth on a grand slam home run by Lee Grosscup (Green/Green).
Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) had his longest outing of the year on the mound for the Raiders going eight innings, giving up six hits and striking out five to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Olasz had four hits while Piotrowski, Mathis, Knott and Weber each finished with three hits.
Mount Union picked up right where they left off in game two with a seven-run second inning to take a commanding 7-0 win on its way to a 12-4 win.
In the inning, Morino drove in two on a triple, Grosscup drove in two on a double while Olasz and Mathis each drove in runs as well.
The Raiders got another run in the fifth inning on a Jakubik single to make it 8-0.
Capital scored a run in the sixth before Mount Union tacked on a runs in both the seventh – on a Jeff Bennett (Uniontown/Lake) sacrifice fly and eighth – on a passed ball to make 10-1.
The Crusaders scored three in the eighth but Mount Union finished the scoring with a two-run ninth as Grosscup drove in a run and then later scored on a wild pitch for the 12-4 final.
Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) allowed a run on four hits over the first six innings to pick up the win for Mount Union.
The Raiders start a four-game homestand with a single nine-inning non-conference game Sunday, April 13 at 2 pm against Penn State-Behrend.
