Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team belted out a combined 21 runs on 37 hits in a doubleheader sweep – 8-7 in 10 innings and 13-2 wins – against Muskingum Thursday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders are now 17-9 overall, 5-7 in the OAC, have won five straight games including four conference games.
Muskingum falls to 10-15 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
In game one, the Raiders had 21 hits and needed every one of them as the final hit was an RBI single from Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) in the bottom of the 10th inning that led Mount Union to an 8-7 extra inning victory.
Mohney had three hits, Lee Grosscup (Green/Green) drove in two runs on three hits and Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) also had three hits for the Raiders.
Mount Union took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first before Muskingum scored three runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead.
The Raiders tied the game with a run in the bottom of third, then extended the lead to 5-3 with two more runs in the fourth.
Both teams scored single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to leave the score 7-5 in favor of Mount Union but the Muskies tied the game with a pair of runs in the eighth.
Gino Ceriani (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) started on the mound for Mount Union and struck out five over seven innings, Tom Bekelesky (Akron/Firestone) went the next two innings and Matt Murzynski (Mentor/Lake Catholic) pitched the 10th to pick up the win to improve to 4-2 on the season.
In game two, the Raiders got a strong pitching performance from Kyle Toma (Strongsville/Strongsville) as he scattered six hits over 7.2 innings to get the win and move his record to 3-1 on the season.
Mount Union scored a run in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to run out to a 6-0 lead.
Muskingum scored single runs in the seventh and eighth and brought the tying run to the on-deck circle before Ryan Sason (Mentor/Lake Catholic) came on for the Raiders and got the last out in the inning.
The Raiders put the game away with a seven-run eighth inning and went on to the 13-2 win.
Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak) had three hits and drove in two runs, Ricky Olasz (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) drove in three runs on a pair of hits including his first home run of the season and Jakubik drove in three runs to pace the Raiders at the plate.
Mount Union travels to Baldwin Wallace for an OAC doubleheader Friday at 1 pm in Berea.
