Box Score BETHANY, W.Va. – While the power was off in the stadium in Bethany, W.Va., for most the game, Mount Union's offense was on as the No. 3 ranked Purple Raiders defeated Bethany, 58-7 Saturday at Bison Stadium.
All-American senior quarterback Kevin Burke (Westlake/Lakewood St. Edward) threw for a career-best 411 yards passing with three touchdowns while sophomore running back Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake) ran for three scores to pace a Mount Union offense that generated 360 yards in the first half and ran out to a 38-0 halftime lead.
A pair of former quarterbacks on the roster became Burke's top two receivers on the day in juniors Roman Namdar (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) and Taurice Scott (Alliance/Alliance).
Namdar, who saw game action for the first time since 2012, had eight catches for 162 yards with a touchdown while Scott had three catches for 95 yards including a 75-yard scoring bomb on the Raiders' first possesion of the second half that made the score 45-7.
After Bethany posted 33 yards on its first possession, the Raider defense shut down the Bison allowing them just three yards the remainder of the first quarter and 68 total yards the entire second quarter.
Junior linebacker Jonathan Gonell (Pembroke Pines, Fla./University School, Fla.) had five tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss to pace the defense.
Mount Union finished the game with 582 yards of total offense while Bethany was held to 211.
Senior kicker Edward Ruhnke (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) converted three field goals from 36, 27 and 21 yards while going 7-for-7 on extra points.
With about 10 minutes to go in the second quarter and Mount Union holding a 21-0 lead, the power was knocked out to most of the Bethany campus and remained out for the rest of the game.
Mount Union is off next week before opening Ohio Athletic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1:30 pm at Muskingum in New Concord.
