Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A furious comeback came up short as the Mount Union women's soccer team lost 4-3 at John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Tuesday in University Heights.
The Purple Raiders fall to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the OAC and need a win in the regular season finale Saturday at 7 p.m. against Otterbein at Mount Union Stadium to guarantee a spot in next week's OAC Tournament.
John Carroll (5-11-2, 3-4-1 OAC) got on the board with a goal in the third minute and tacked on two more later in the half to lead 3-0 at the break. The Blue Streaks extended the lead to 4-0 with a goal just 3:14 into the second half.
Just 13 seconds later, Mount Union began its comeback when Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia) took a pass from Amy Bobonik (Medina/Medina) and beat the keeper on the low right to make it 4-1.
The Raiders cut the deficit to 4-2 in the 61st minute when Bridget Mulhall (Mentor/Lake Catholic) fed Taylor Lanese (Parma/Valley Forge) for a goal.
Mount Union then got to within a goal as Kelsey Malenic (Poland/Poland Seminary) hit her conference leading 15th goal on a free kick from 30 yards out in the 72nd minute.
The Raiders came up empty on four shots in the final 18 minutes.
