Baseball: Big Inning Helps Raiders Snap Three-Game Skid; Mount Union 11, Thiel 9

Box Score

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- A seven-run sixth inning and runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth helped Mount Union to an 11-9 win at Thiel Wednesday at Tomcat Park in Greenville, Pa.

The win halted a three-game losing streak for the Purple Raiders and leaves their record at 9-6 while Thiel falls to 11-4 overall.

The Tomcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with three of those runs coming on a home run from Brian Genco.

Mount Union got one back in the third inning as Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) and James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett) started the inning with back-to-back singles then Cole Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) drove in a run.

Thiel came back with a run in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.

Colt Turley (Millersport/Liberty Union) got a one-out single for the Raiders in the sixth and after an Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) walk came home on an RBI single from Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) to close the gap to 6-2.

Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) followed with his first home run of the year -- a three-run shot -- that brought Mount Union to within a run, 6-5.

The Raiders were not done in the inning as Weber and Lake reached base with singles before Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) had a two-out, two-RBI to give Mount Union a 7-6 lead.

Scott would then score on a Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) single to cap the seven-run inning and the Raiders led 8-6.

Thiel pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth but Mount Union came right back to take advantage of an error in the seventh and Weber had a sacrifice fly RBI to make it 9-7.

The Raiders extended the lead to 10-7 in the eighth as Piotrowski got a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Turley single.

The Tomcats rallied with two runs in the eighth to get the score to 10-9 before Mount Union picked up an insurance run in the ninth as Jakubik had a his third hit of the day -- a two-out double -- then scored on a single from Weber, who also had three hits.

Thiel got the tying run to the plate in the ninth but a double play helped Brandon Bell (Strattonville, Pa./Clarion Limestone) secure his second save of the season.

Bell was one of five Raiders to pitch on the day as Beau Taylor (Alliance/West Branch) picked up the win out of the pen.

Riley Schwertz started and took the loss for Thiel.

Mount Union stays on the road and returns to Ohio Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. against Ohio Northern.
