Softball: Raiders End Spring Trip with a Sweep on Saturday

CLERMONT, Florida—The University of Mount Union softball team closed out their spring trip with a sweep –11-10 over Roger Williams and 5-4 over Rhode Island—Saturday in Clermont, Florida.

The Purple Raiders move to 7-5 on the season.

In a game that went to 10 innings, Roger Williams got an early 3-0 lead over the Raiders by the fourth inning capitalizing on two errors.

Mount Union tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, sophomore Olivia Schumacher (Gahanna/Gahanna Lincoln) singled to second base sending two runners home.

The next at bat, junior Andi VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) singled to right field driving in the third run.

Roger Williams took the lead in the sixth inning earning two runs off of three hits and one error by the Raiders.

Mount Union got the bats moving taking the lead back in the bottom of the sixth as freshman Shelby  VanSickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) doubled to center field. A. VanSickle followed with a double down the left field line driving in the first run of the inning.

Freshman Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) and senior Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) each hit singles sending two runs home.

Sophomore Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) closed the inning with a home run giving the Raiders the 8-5 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning Roger Williams fought back with three runs to tie the game 8-8.

Mount Union was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh sending the game to extra innings.

In the eighth inning both teams scored one run tying the game at nine. A. VanSickle singled to left field on a sacrifice fly sending Schumacher home.

In the ninth inning both teams again scored one run tying the game at 10. Lehman hit a double to center field sending Siedlak home for the tenth run.

Mount Union held Roger Williams in the tenth inning then ended the game as Schumacher hit the game-winning run as the Raiders defeated Roger Williams 11-10.

In game two, Schumacher opened the game with a triple to center field hitting five for nine on the day.

Baitt singled down the right field line earning an RBI and the first run of the game.

Rhode Island tied the game in the fourth inning with three hits earning one run.

The Raiders extended the lead with three walks followed by a triple by junior Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) earning three RBI's. Freshman Jessica Kennedy (Beach City/Fairless) followed with a single down the right field line sending Okuda home as the Purple Raiders gained the 5-1 lead.

Rhode Island quickly cut the lead to one scoring three runs in the next inning with a home run for Justina Thoma driving in three runs.

Mount Union went on to defeat Rhode Island 5-4 with junior Erin Simmons (Suffield/Field) earning the win giving her a 3-2 record on the season.
