Baseball: Mount Union Clubs Crusaders; Raiders Get 26 Hits in Sweep of Capital

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team tallied 22 runs on 26 hits in beating Capital 11-7 and 11-5 in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders are now 15-8 overall and have three straight conference games to even their OAC record at 4-4 while Capital is now 12-13 overall and 4-6 in the OAC.

Eight different Mount Union starters had a hit and seven drove in runs in game one.

Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) drove in three runs and James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett) drove in two runs to pace the offense.

Weber got the Raiders on the board with a sacrifice fly in the second.

Piotrowski got things going in third for Mount Union as he executed a squeeze play with a sacrifice bunt with runners at the corners that plated a run and started a four-run frame which moved the lead to 5-0.

The Raiders made it 6-0 in the fourth as Adam Bialosky (Hinckley/Medina Highland) tagged up from second on a fly out and throw to third went wide and he scored.

Capital cut into the lead with two runs in the fifth but Mount Union came back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning with three-straight RBI singles from Mitchell Lake (Orwell/Grand Valley), Bialosky and Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) that gave the Raiders a 9-2 lead.

The Crusaders rallied again with four runs in the sixth to close the margin to 9-6.

Mount Union got two big runs in the seventh to go up 11-6 on a two-out, two-run single from Piotrowski.

Capital rallied again with a run in the ninth but was stopped there as the final score was 11-7.

Wes Kemp (Hartville/Lake) retired the first 11 hitters of the game, had just three hits over the first five innings to get the win and move to 3-3 on the season.  Mitch McCristall (Ontario/Ontario) gave up just a run on five hits over the final four innings to get his first collegiate save.

Mount Union again got off to a quick start in game two running out to an 8-0 lead over the first innings.  The Raiders drew six walks in those first three frames and four of them gave around to score.

Sherwood drove in three runs on three hits, Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) drove in three runs on two hits and Lake had three hits as the Raiders had 14 total hits in the game.

Capital again tried to mount a rally as the Crusaders score a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to get the score to 8-3.

Mount Union got those three runs back with two in the fifth off RBI doubles from Sherwood and Jakubik then a lead off walk to Colt Turley (Millersport/Liberty Union) would result in a run on another squeeze play this one from Lake to put the Raiders up 11-3.

Capital plated a run in the seventh and another in the ninth for the 11-5 final.

Kyle Toma (Strongsville/Strongsville) started on the mound for Mount Union and went 6.2 innings for the sixth win of the season which is tied for the OAC lead.

Brandon Bell (Strattonville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) allowed only a run on three hits over the final 2.1 innings.

Capital starting pitcher Connor Golden did not get out of the second inning and took the loss.

Mount Union, winners of six of its last seven games, play an OAC doubleheader tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Marietta.
