Baseball: Mount Union Drops Heartbreaker in Game One Then Gets Swept at Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team suffered an 11-10 extra inning loss in game one then dropped game two 18-5 to Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday at Don Schaly Stadium.

The sweep leaves the Purple Raiders at 15-10 overall and 4-6 in the OAC while Marietta stands at 15-11 overall and 6-4 in the OAC.

Marietta's Ryan Hanahan hit a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning of game one to send the game to extra innings.  In the 10th inning, Tyler Packanik hit an RBI single with bases loaded for the game winner.

Mount Union had a 10-4 lead midway through the fifth inninng that included a four-run fourth and five-run fifth innings.  The Pioneers then scored two runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to close the gap to 10-8 and set up the ninth inning heroics.

The Raiders had 16 hits and were paced at the plate by Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) and James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett), who each had three hits, Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) drove in three runs while Adam Bialosky (Hinkley/Medina Highland) and Colt Turley (Millersport/Liberty Union) each drove in two.

David Stover pitched the final 5.0 innings for the Pioneers and did not allow a run to pick up his first win of the year.

Scott Chase went the final 3.0 innings for Mount Union and fell to 1-2 with the loss.

In game two, Marietta broke a 1-1 tie open with a nine-run second inning and went on to an 18-5 win.

Weber had two hits and drove in two runs for the Raiders.

Mount Union next plays an OAC doubleheader at Muskingum Tuesday, Apr. 14 at 1 p.m. in New Concord.
