Baseball: Pair of Comebacks Come Up Short For Mount Union; Raiders Swept at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team came up short against No. 18 Baldwin Wallace in 7-6 and 12-10 Ohio Athletic Conference losses Saturday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders are now 17-12 overall and 6-8 in the OAC while Baldwin Wallace is 21-7 overall and 8-6 in the OAC.

In game one, James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett) drove in three runs while Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) and Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) each had two hits to pace Mount Union at the plate.

The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Morino had a single then later scored on a groundout from Weber.

BW would then score three unanswered with a two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth.

Mount Union would tie the game in the fifth with four-straight singles -- the final two from Sherwood and Morino -- that would plate two runs.

A two-out two-run single from Weber in the seventh would cap a three-run inning and give the Raiders a 6-4 lead.

Baldwin Wallace tied the game with two runs in the eighth and scored the go ahead run in the ninth on a one-out RBI single from Hunter Handel.

Mount Union got the tying run to third base before the game ended.

Alex Albright allowed just one hit over 1.1 innings to get the win while Brandon Cichocki pitched the ninth for the save for BW while Scott Chase (North Ridgeville/St. Ignatius) took the loss out of the pen for Mount Union.

In game two, Baldwin Wallace sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored five runs to take the lead.

The Jackets added a run in the third to lead 6-0.

Mount Union got back into the game with a five-run third inning that was finished off with a two-run single from Mitchell Lake (Orwell/Grand Valley).

BW then posted a four-run fifth inning to lead 10-5.

The Raiders got a run back in the fifth on two-out double from Colt Turley (Millersport/Liberty Union) which made it 10-6.

Mount Union closed the gap to 10-8 with two more runs in the seventh before the Jackets tacked on single runs in the eighth and ninth to lead 12-8.

Another rally in the ninth as Mount Union got two more runs, one on an RBI single from Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) -- his fifth hit of the game, but Lake -- the tying run -- got caught stealing trying to get into scoring position to end the game.

Four Baldwin Wallace pitchers threw as Logan Herrernan started and got the win while Cichocki came on in the ninth to get his second save of the day.

Mount Union starter Wes Kemp (Uniontown/Lake) took the loss for the Raiders.

Mount Union starts a six-game road trip tomorrow at Penn State-Behrend.
