Baseball: Mount Union Sweeps OAC Series at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team got 3-2 and 7-4 wins at Wilmington Monday in an Ohio Athletic Conference series.

The sweep takes the Purple Raiders to 20-14 overall and 8-8 in the OAC.  It is the fourth straight year of at least 20 wins -- a first in school history.

In a 3-2 game one win, Kyle Toma (Strongsville/Strongsville) pitched 8.0 innings and allowed just a run on six hits striking out five to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Mount Union got all its runs in the third inning as Tyler Simcox (Akron/Ellet) and Cole Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) started the inning with singles, then after an out Mitchell Lake (Orwell/Grand Valley) drove in a run on single to make it 1-0. 

After Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett) had a two-RBI single up the middle that extended the lead to 3-0.

Wilmington (8-26, 0-16 OAC) got a run in the sixth then rallied in the bottom of the ninth.  The Quakers loaded the bases with one-out and scored a run on a sacrifice fly before Brandon Bell (Strattonville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) got a strikeout to end the game.

In the second game, Mount Union jumped out to a 5-0 lead with two in the first and single runs in the second, fifth and sixth.

Wilmington then scored four unanswered with two in the sixth and two in the eighth to close to 5-4 but the Raiders got a pair of runs in the ninth for the 7-4 final.

Colt Turley (Millersport/Liberty Union) went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, Weber and Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) also drove in runs to pace the Mount Union offense.

Beau Taylor (Alliance/West Branch) started on the mound for the Raiders and went 5.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits to get the win while Bell went the final 1.2 innings to get his second save of the day and fifth of the season.
