Baseball: Mount Union Bats Help Get Split With #6 Heidelberg

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team belted out 17 hits to score 15 runs as the Purple Raiders handed No. 6 ranked Heidelberg its first Ohio Athletic Conference loss 15-7 in game two of a conference doubleheader Monday at 23rd St. Field.

The Purple Raiders, who dropped game one 11-3, are now 13-8 overall and 2-4 in the OAC while nationally ranked Heidelberg is 16-3 overall and 5-1 in the OAC.

With the score tied 2-2 in game two, Mount Union busted the game open with a eight-run fourth inning as 12 different Raiders came to the plate in the frame.

Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) had two hits in the inning including a three-run home run -- his first of the season -- as he had three hits in the game.

Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) had a two-RBI single in the big inning and for the game drove in three runs on four hits.

Heidelberg tried to get back in the game with two runs in the sixth that made the score 10-3 but the Raiders put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh with the last of those runs coming on a sacrifice fly RBI from Mohney -- his fourth RBI of the game.

The Berg got three more runs in the eighth on a three-run home run from Derek Hug, which was the fourth homer Heidelberg hit on the day.

Kyle Toma (Strongsville/Strongsville) got his fifth win of the season on the mound for Mount Union as he started and gave up four runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings.

Heidelberg's Kyle Fluharty took his first loss of the season as he could not get out of the fourth inning.

In the opener, Heidelberg had 17 hits and scored in seven different innings on its way to an 11-3 win.

TJ Harkness and Eric Monroe each drove in three runs on three hits.

The Raiders had 14 hits of their own but managed only three runs as Mount Union stranded 13 runners on base.

Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) drove in two runs with a two-out single and Mitchell Lake (Orwell/Grand Valley) also had two hits to pace the Raider offense.

Adam Manner went 6.0 innings to get the win for Heidelberg while Wes Kemp (Uniontown/Lake) gave up six runs in 4.0 innnigs of work to take the loss for Mount Union.

Mount Union next plays an OAC series Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Marietta.
