Women's Soccer: Mount Union Ties School Record With 9-0 Win Over Defiance

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union women's soccer team had a record breaking night against Defiance with a 9-0 win.

The Raiders tied a school record for most goals in a game with nine. It is the most goals in a game since a 9-0 win at Hiram on October 23, 1991.

Mount Union (4-4) scored six goals in the first half. The first of which came off of the foot of freshman Hailee Brown (Chesterland/West Geauga) at the 2:38 minute mark to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Mount Union scored again just two minutes later by freshman Nicole Lanese (Macedoinia/Nordonia) on a pass from senior Kelsey Malenic (Poland/Poland Seminary) to give Mount Union a 2-0 lead.

Lanese scored her second goal of the game less than a minute later off of another pass from Malenic to put the Raiders on top 3-0.

The Raiders scored again in the 13th minute as Malenic weaved through defenders and netted her first goal of the night to extend the lead to 4-0.

Malenic scored her second goal of the game at the 14:30 minute mark from a through ball from Lanese to put the Raiders up 5-0.

Mount Union scored their sixth goal in 18 minutes as junior Taylor Lanese (Parma/Valley Forge) scored her first goal of the season to give Mount Union a 6-0 lead going into halftime.

Mount Union came out of the break and freshman Alex Brown (Killbuck/West Holmes) scored her first career goal to give Mount Union a 7-0 lead at the 47:37 minute mark.

Sophomore Amy Bobonik (Medina/Medina) scored her first goal of the season on a header off of a corner from junior Carolyn Balzano (Poland/Poland Seminary) at the 54:12 minute mark to give the Raiders an 8-0 lead.

The Raiders tied the record for most goals in a single game with nine in the 83rd minute off of the head of senior Veronica Atkinson (Carrollton/Carrollton) from sophomore Shannon Catanella (Cherry Hill, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) to give the Raiders a 9-0 lead

Mount Union next travels to Grove City (Pa.) on Friday, September 25 at 4 pm.
