Football: Strong Second Half Gives #1 Mount Union Homecoming Win Over Heidelberg

ALLIANCE, Ohio – No. 1 ranked Mount Union outgained Heidelberg 302-31 in the second half to score a 50-14 Ohio Athletic Conference win Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.

Mount Union (5-0, 4-0 OAC) led 21-14 at the half and the defense came out in the third and held Heidelberg (2-3, 2-2 OAC) to 33 total yards and one first down for the quarter while the Purple Raider offense tallied 17 points to put the game out of reach.

The linebacker duo of senior Charlie Dear (Massillon/Jackson) and sophomore Danny Robinson (Massillon/Massillon Washington) each had a game-high 12 tackles while junior Kollyn Crenshaw (Solon/Solon) had an interception.

On offense, the Raiders had 502 total yards as they chewed up 278 yards on the ground with six rushing touchdowns and were led by the senior tandem of Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake) and Dwayne Aaron (Cleveland/Lakewood St. Edward).

Mitchell rushed for 133 yards and two scores on 26 carries to mark the fifth straight and 17th career 100-yard rushing game while Aaron also scored twice and matched his career-high with 84 yards on 15 carries.

The other two rushing touchdowns came from freshman quarterbacks Luke Poorman (Orlando, Fla./University School) and Dom Davis (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary).

Poorman, who came in late in the second quarter, went 10-of-13 for 146 yards and threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to freshman Justin Hill (Circleville/Jireh Prep, N.C.). Poorman, Davis and fellow freshman quarterback D'Angleo Fulford (Cooper City, Fla./Mirmar) combined to go 18-of-26 passing for 224 yards.

Senior wide receiver Jordan Hargrove (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary) had a game-high six catches for 71 yards.

Heidelberg quarterback Tyler Stoyle was 11-of-29 passing for 172 yards with a touchdown and an interception while Brandon Short had 63 yards rushing. Defensive lineman Austin Crow had 11 tackles, five for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Mount Union opened the scoring with a Mitchell one-yard touchdown run with 8:32 left in the first quarter.

Heidelberg tied the game on the ensuing possession as Stoyle threw a four-yard TD pass to Demetrius Magee to cap an 11-play, 70-yard drive.

Mitchell had his second touchdown run of the game on a 25-yard scamper to give the Raiders a 14-7 lead after one quarter.

Mount Union made it 21-7 as Aaron scored from a yard out on the Raiders first possession of the second quarter.

After each teams traded possessions, Heidelberg put a 12-play, 72-yard drive together with a five-yard touchdown run from Short to get it to 21-14 three minutes before the half.

Mount Union's opening drive of the second half was stopped at the Heidelberg 38-yard line but Adam Snyder (Baltimore/Liberty Union) pinned the Berg deep with a punt to the six-yard line. After Heidelberg went three-and-out, the Raiders got the ball back at the Berg 40 and marched down to score on a 12-yard run by Poorman.

The Raiders scored again on their next possession when Alex Louthan (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) hit a 37-yard field goal to extend the lead to 31-14.

A little less than two minutes later, Poorman would hit Hill on a 45-yard touchdown pass that made it 38-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

Aaron and Davis both had rushing touchdowns in the fourth to finish the scoring.

Mount Union plays Capital next Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1:30 p.m. in Columbus.
