Women's Soccer: Mount Union Defeats John Carroll 2-1 in OAC Quarterfinals

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- No. 3 seed Mount Union defeated No. 6 seed John Carroll 2-1 in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Tuesday at Mount Union Stadium.

Freshman Maggie O'Donnell (Avon/Avon) scored a pair of goals in the game's first 23 minutes while on defense junior keeper Paige Freel (Niles/Niles McKinley) had eight saves including a key one in the final minute to send the Purple Raiders to the semifinals for the third time ever and first time since 1996.

Mount Union (10-6-3), now unbeaten in a school-record nine games, advances to play at No. 2 seed Capital Thursday at 6 p.m. 

O'Donnell got the Raiders on the board in the fourth minute off an assist from junior Katie Goedecke (Cuyahoga Falls/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary).

O'Donnell tallied her second goal of the night at the 22:10 mark after a shot by Goedecke was deflected by the John Carroll goalkeeper and she found the finish as Mount Union led the Blue Streaks 2-0 through the break.

John Carroll (7-7-6) got to within a goal in the first three minutes of the second half on a score from Dre Regrut. 

Freel then stopped three more scoring chances for the Blue Streaks to preserve the win.
