Football: No. 1 Mount Union Falls in Regular Season Finale

Box Score

ALLIANCE, Ohio – No. 1 ranked Mount Union could not overcome four turnovers in a 31-28 loss to No. 16 ranked John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference football game Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.

John Carroll (9-1, 9-0 OAC) claims its fourth OAC title and first since 1994 along with the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs.

It was first regular season loss for the Purple Raiders (9-1, 8-1 OAC) since 2005 and first time they have not at least shared the conference title since 1991. Mount Union will wait until Sunday night at 6 p.m. to see if it gets one of six national at-large bids to the NCAA Playoffs.

The lead changed hands four times and three of those came in the final five minutes.

John Carroll sophomore quarterback Anthony Moeglin hit William Woods with a 24-yd touchdown pass with 39 seconds to play that turned out to be the game winner.

John Carroll scored twice in the first quarter but missed the extra point to lead 13-0.

Mount Union freshman quarterback Dom Davis (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary) had a 25-yard touchdown run on fourth down with 38 seconds left in the first half to make it 13-7 at halftime.

The Raiders took the lead, 14-13, on the opening possession of the second half as Davis threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Tim Kennedy (Hudson/Hudson).

Davis threw another TD pass later in the quarter – a 20-yarder to Justin Hill (Circleville/Jireh Prep, N.C.) and Mount Union extended the lead to 21-13.

Ray Brewster intercepted a Davis pass at the John Carroll three-yard line early in the fourth quarter and Blue Streaks went 76 yards capped by a 40-yard touchdown pass from Moeglin to Nico James to close to 21-19.

John Carroll retook the lead when Davis lost the ball on a sack by Reese Armstrong and Dylan Hall picked it up and ran 45 yards for a score as it was 25-21 with 5:13 to play.

Davis and the Raiders responded as he engineered a 70-yard drive that ended with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Braeden Friss (Avon/Avon) that put Mount Union back up 28-25 with 3:30 left.

John Carroll got the ball back on its own 32-yard line and seven plays later on third and 12, Moeglin tossed the touchdown pass.

Moeglin was 18-of-33 for 239 yards with three touchdowns while Ro Golphin had 119 yards rushing including an 80-yard touchdown run to lead John Carroll.

Anthony Christopher had nine tackles to lead a Blue Streak defense that had 7.0 sacks.

Davis also threw three touchdowns as he was 19-of-39 for 247 yards and ran for another score. Davis hit eight different receivers as Jared Ruth (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) had four catches for 56 yards while Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake) had 53 yards rushing on 18 carries.

Dashon Redman (Steubenville/Steubenville) had eight tackles while Danny Robinson (Massillon/Massillon Washington) and Mike Vidal (Miami, Fla./Ronald Regan Doral) each had two of the Raiders 7.0 sacks to pace the defense.
