Women's Soccer: Mount Union's 2-1 Loss to #3 Trinity in NCAA Tournament Ends Season

Box Score

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Mount Union women's soccer team fell to nationally ranked #3 Trinity (Texas) 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Illinois Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon.

The loss ends the season and a school-record 11-game unbeaten streak for the Purple Raiders, who finish with an overall record of 12-7-3.

The Purple Raiders took an early lead when sophomore Nicole Lanese (Macedonia/Nordonia) scored after blowing past two defenders and taking the keeper 1-on-1 in the 11th minute. Her goal was just the second first-half goal Trinity allowed this season, and the sixth overall.

Trinity quickly answered, tying the game two and a half minutes later. The Tigers recorded two additional shots on goal in the half, but Mount Union goalkeeper Paige Freel (Niles/Niles McKinley) made two key stops to keep an even score through halftime.

Freel recorded four additional saves in the second half, but the Raiders fell behind at the 59:53 mark when Trinity scored the final goal of the game and took a 2-1 lead.

The Raiders' NCAA Tournament appearance is the first-ever in team history. Mount Union completes its winning season as Ohio Athletic Conference Champions.
