UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team claimed its first Ohio Athletic Conference win in salvaging a split at John Carroll Wednesday in University Heights.

The Purple Raiders (10-13, 1-5 OAC) won game two 10-9 after it fell in the opener 6-1.

A four-run first inning in game two, boosted Mount Union out to a 7-1 lead after three innings. John Carroll (12-13, 5-3 OAC) scored five unanswered runs – two in the fourth and three in the sixth to close the gap to 7-6. The Raiders came back with three runs in the seventh to take the lead to 10-6 before the Blue Streaks rallied with three runs in the eighth but the Raiders closed out the game for the win.

Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) drove in two runs on three hits, Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) brought in two runs on a pair of sacrifice flies while Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) and Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) each had three hits as Mount Union belted out 14 hits for the game.

Freshman starter Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) went 5.0 innings to improve to 4-1 on the season while Scott Chase (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) went the final 1.2 innings to pick up his first save on the season.

In the first game, Mount Union was held to just a run on three hits in a 6-1 loss.

The game was tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning as John Carroll took advantage of a pair of Mount Union errors to score a run to take the lead and the Streaks scored one more in the inning to take a 3-1 lead.

John Carroll then scored three more runs in the seventh for the 6-1 final.

Mount Union hosts Ohio Northern in an OAC doubleheader Thursday at 1 p.m. at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
