Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team blasted Capital in a 19-6 win in game one then dropped an 8-7 heartbreaker in 12 innings in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday in Columbus.
The split makes Mount Union 13-14 overall and 4-6 overall while Capital is 16-10 overall and 5-5 in the OAC.
Mount Union belted out a season-high 22 hits and 10 different Raiders had hits in a 19-6 win in game one.
The offense was paced by Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range), who had four hits and drove in four runs -- two coming on his first home run of the season. Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) also had his first homer of the season as he had three hits and two runs batted in and Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) stayed hot at the plate with three hits and three RBI.
James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett) and Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) also drove in three runs for the Raiders.
The game was tied 1-1 after an inning, Mount Union then took a 3-1 lead with two runs in third. Capital got one of those runs back in the third before the Raiders scored 12 unanswered over the next three innings capped by a seven-run sixth inning to take a commanding 15-2 lead.
Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) allowed two runs on six hits over the first five innings to post his second win of the year on the mound.
Capital scored two runs in the first inning of game two but the Raiders came back and took the lead with a three-run second inning. The go ahead run was scored on a double down the left field line by Angelo Cruz (Elyria/Elyria Catholic).
The Crusaders retook the lead with two runs in the seventh but Mount Union rallied again and tied the game in the eighth at 4-4 on a two-out RBI single from Adam Biolosky (Medina/Highland).
The game stayed tied until the top of the 10th when Scott drove in a run on a single but Capital answered in the bottom half of the inning as it got two runners on a pushed one across on a two-out single.
Mount Union then got two runners on base in the 11th and got them home on a Sherwood fielders' choice and a Goodall single but an inning ending double play kept the score at 7-5.
The Crusaders took advantage of a Mount Union error along with an RBI single to tie the game again at 7-7.
In the bottom of the 12th, a walk, a balk and an error put the winning run on third and an Alexander Smith single down the right field line ended the game.
Geno Ceriani (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) took the loss as the last of four Mount Union pitchers to work the game while Brett Colburn, who had three hits as the starting second baseman, pitched the 12th with two strikeouts to pick up the win for Capital.
Mount Union is back in action Sunday at 2 p.m. with a nine-inning non-conference game against Penn State-Behrend at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
