Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team successfully rallied three times but a fourth rally came up short as the Purple Raiders fell 19-17 to Allegheny (Pa.) in a non-conference game Monday at 23rd Street Field.
The Purple Raiders (16-17) found themselves in a 4-0 hole after a half inning but rallied with three runs in the bottom of the first and two in the second to take a 5-4 lead.
Allegheny (17-12) came back with three runs in the third and a run in the fourth to take an 8-5 lead but again Mount Union rallied as a six-run fourth put the Raiders back in front 11-8.
The Gators scored two in the fifth to close to 11-10 but Mount Union got one back in the bottom of the inning to lead 12-10.
Allegheny retook the lead with a three-run sixth at 13-12 but the Raiders came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to lead 14-13.
The Gators then scored three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to appear to take a commanding 19-13 lead.
Mount Union attempted another rally in the ninth sparked by a two-run home run from Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor). The Raiders scored another run and had the tying run on second before the Gators finally put the game away.
Sherwood and Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) each drove in three runs as 11 different Raiders accounted for 18 hits.
Jacob Shick had five hits -- four for extra bases -- and drove in four runs to lead Allegheny.
Seven pitchers worked for the Gators as Cody Coon got the win and Joe Nagel recorded the final out for the save.
Mount Union is back in action Saturday at 1 p.m. hosting Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.
