Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team got a pair of strong pitching performances from two guys from Strongsville, Ohio, sweeping Wilmington, 4-1 and 12-0 in an Ohio Athletic Conference series Saturday at 23rd Street in Alliance.
Senior Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) led Mount Union to a 4-1 win in game one with as he went 8.0 innings and allowed just one run on five hits with a career-best 12 strikeouts.
Fellow senior Kyle Toma (Strongsville/Strongsville) then pitched a complete game four-hit shutout in a 12-0 game two win.
The Purple Raiders are now 18-17 overall and at 8-8 in the OAC need a sweep in its regular season finale next Friday, May 6 at Baldwin Wallace and probably some help to get into the four-team conference tournament.
In game one, Adam Bialosky (Medina/Highland) had two hits and Colt Turley (Millersport/Liberty Union) drove in two runs to lead the Raiders at the plate.
Wilmington grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the third but Mount Union came back with a three-run fourth. In that inning, the Raiders tied the game on an RBI single from James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett) then took the lead on a two-out, two-run, double from Turley to lead 3-1.
Mount Union tacked on another run in the fifth on an RBI single from Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor).
In game two, Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) drove in four runs as the Raiders belted 15 hits in the game.
The Raiders got an early lead in game two as back-to-back doubles in the first inning from Bialosky and Scott for a 1-0 lead.
Mount Union then added four more runs in the second all after two outs as Sherwood drove in one run on a bunt single, then two on a double from Scott followed by another double by Weber that extended the lead to 5-0.
The Raiders put two more on the board in the fourth on a solo home run from Mitchell Lake (Orwell/Grand Valley) and a sacrifice fly RBI from Weber and two more in the fifth on a double from Turley and a sacrifice fly RBI from Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) to extend it to 9-0.
Mount Union finished the scoring with a run in the seventh on a sacrfice fly RBI from Cole Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) then two more in the eighth as back-to-back triples from Conner Koski (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield) and Derek Sullivan (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler Area) for the 12-0 final.
Mount Union hosts Washington & Jefferson in the regular season home finale Wednesday, May 4 at 5 p.m. at 23rd Street Field.
