ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union lost 8-5 to Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) in the home regular season finale Wednesday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders are now 18-18 overall on the season while Washington & Jefferson improves to 22-14 on the season.

James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett) went 4-for-4 , Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) went 3-for-3 and Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) drove in two runs to lead a Mount Union offense that had 16 hits but the Raiders stranded 13 runners on base in the defeat.

Nick Vento drove in three runs for the Presidents while Garrett Harstine got the win out of the pen.

The game was scoreless until the third when Mount Union got a one-out triple from Sherwood, who later scored on a pinch hit RBI single from Cole Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) for a 1-0 lead.

W&J took the lead with a three-run fourth inning but the Raiders got one of those back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Sherwood that made it 3-2.

The Presidents blew the game open with a four-run fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead and extended it to 8-2 with a run in the eighth.

Mount Union rallied with a run in the eighth on an RBI ground-out from Sherwood and two more in the ninth on a pinch hit triple from Dakota Hoffman (Sidney/Calvary Christian), who then scored on a wild pitch. W&J brought in its closer – Derek Helbing, who got the final out with tying run at the plate, for his sixth save of the season.

Mount Union closes out the regular season Friday at 1 p.m. in an Ohio Athletic Conference series at Baldwin Wallace. The Raiders have to sweep for any chance of making next week's four-team OAC Tournament.
