ADA, Ohio -- Mount Union's wrestling team lost its Ohio Athletic Conference opener 23-12 at No. 25 ranked Ohio Northern Tuesday in Ada.
The Purple Raiders won four of the 10 contested matches to fall to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in the OAC
The match started at 149 pounds and Mount Union won that bout as Kyle Ferguson (Akron/Manchester) scored a 6-3 decision.
Ohio Northern (5-0, 1-0 OAC) won the next four matches including major decision wins at 174 and 184 to take a 14-3 lead.
Grant Martin (Hartville/Lake) got the Raiders a 3-1 at 197 pounds to bring the score to 14-6 but the Polar Bears came back with a win at 285 and a pin at 125 to take a commanding 23-6 lead.
Mount Union won the final two matches with a 2-0 overtime win from Nathan Kirk (Adena/Buckeye Local) at 133 and a 7-2 win by No. 7 in the nation Alec Cotton (Hartville/Lake) at 141 pounds.
The Raiders return home to host the Mount Union Open Sunday, Jan. 15 in Peterson Fieldhouse at the McPherson Academic & Athletic Complex in Alliance.
