Box Score

TIFFIN, Ohio – No. 2 ranked Mount Union got off to a fast start and went on to a 63-7 Ohio Athletic Conference win against No. 21 ranked Heidelberg Saturday in Tiffin.

The Purple Raiders now find themselves alone in first place in the OAC at 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference while Heidelberg takes its first loss of the season at 4-1, 3-1 OAC.

Mount Union quarterback D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla. / Miramar) threw for over 300 yards with three touchdowns and ran for two more in the first half as the Raiders out-gained the Berg 425-110 to take a 42-7 lead at the break.

Fulford, who added his fourth touchdown pass of the game on the first drive of the second half, accounted for 403 yards of total offense as he had 341 passing yards on 17-of-24 passing and 62 yards rushing.

The Raiders had a pair of wide receivers go over 100 yards as Jared Ruth (Indianapolis, Ind. / Pike) had 151 yards on six catches with two touchdowns while Justin Hill (Circleville / Jireh Prep, N.C.) had 158 yards on five catches with two touchdowns.

Charlie Dear (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) had eight tackles and a tackle for loss and Austin White (Wadsworth / Wadsworth) had five tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss to lead a defense that held Heidelberg to 261 yards.

The Raiders picked off a pair of passes from Brian Groves (Stow / Stow) and Louis Berry (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shady Side Academy), who brought one back for a touchdown and was the fifth interception return for a TD this year for Mount Union.

The Raiders struck on the game's very first play from scrimmage as Fulford hit Ruth on a 70-yard touchdown pass.

Mount Union's defense held the Berg on downs on its first drive then Fulford engineered a nine-play drive that he capped with a six-yard run to make it 14-0 five minutes into the game.

Heidelberg then answered on a drive aided by a pair of Mount Union penalties and Stoyle hit Tony Morris on a 14-yard TD pass to cut the lead in half, 14-7.

The Raiders went back up two scores just 2:10 later as Fulford threw his second TD pass of the day this time to Justin Hill as Mount Union led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, the Berg lined for a punt but Austin White chased down the rugby style punter Austin Baker and tackled him at the Heidelberg 15-yard line then two plays later Fulford ran it in from 13 yards out to take the score to 28-7.

The Raiders stayed fast as they covered 93 yards on five plays headlined by a 64 yard pass from Fulford to Hill and Mount Union scored on a nine-yard rush from DeMarco Haynes that moved it to 35-7.

Fulford tossed his third touchdown of the half – a 28-yarder to Hill -- with just four seconds before the break to give Mount Union a 42-7 lead.

Fulford finished his day with a 25 yard touchdown pass to Hill on the Raiders first possession of the third quarter then on the ensuing drive Louis Berry picked off a pass and ran it back 35 yards for a score that made it 56-7.

Later in the quarter, Groves interception return back to the Heidelberg nine yard line and two plays later Jawanza Evans-Morris (Coral Springs, Fla. / Taravella) ran it in for a score to lead 63-7 after three.

Mount Union returns home next week to host Capital in an OAC game Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
