Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio – No. 2 ranked Mount Union defeated Washington & Lee 21-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs on a rainy Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.
The Mount Union defense held a Washington & Lee offense who leads the nation with 421 rushing yards per game to 220 yards on the ground 269 total yards.
Junior linebacker Danny Robinson (Massillon / Massillon Washington) led the unit with 13 stops and a sack.
Freshman Josh Breece ran for 169 yards for Washington & Lee (8-3)
Freshman Josh Petruccelli (Perry / Perry) rushed for 109 yards while sophomore quarterback D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla. / Miramar) ran for a score and threw for two more to pace the Purple Raiders offense.
Throughout a steady downpour, the game featured just 15 pass attempts but one of those was a 60-yard scoring pass from Fulford to Jared Ruth on the first play of the fourth quarter to give the Raiders a commanding 21-0 lead.
Mount Union led 14-0 at halftime with a pair of first quarter touchdowns as Fulford had a one-yard TD run and then threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Braeden Friss (Avon / Avon).
Mount Union (11-0) advances to next Saturday's second round against either Illinois Wesleyan or Case Western Reserve at noon at a site to be announced Sunday.
