Baseball: #30 Mount Union Sweeps Capital; Raiders Run Win Streak to Six

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team, ranked No. 30 in the nation, swept Capital 1-0 and 7-6 in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders have now won six-straight and nine of their last 10 games to stand 22-5 overall and first in the OAC with an 11-1 record.

For the third time in its last four games, Mount Union needed a late rally as they scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to score a 7-6 win in game two.

The Raiders were down 2-1 after three innings and took a 4-2 lead with a three-run fifth inning as Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) had a two-out, two-run single.

Capital (14-14, 3-7 OAC) came back with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a 6-4 lead.

Kyle Spellman (Ravenna/Ravenna) started the eighth with a double but after two outs, pinch hitter Collin Scott (Richmond/Edison) reached on an error to extend the inning. Scott was lifted for pinch runner Angelo Cruz (Lorain/Elyria Catholic), who then stole second – one of eight Raider stolen bases in the game that put two runners in scoring position. Conner Koski (Mayfield Hts./Mayfield) followed with a two-run single to tie the game at 6-6 and would later produce the go ahead run when he scored on a wild pitch.

Noah Skladan (Amherst/Steele) started the game on the mound and allowed just one earned on three hits over the first five innings then three Mount Union relievers combined to finish the game as Mike Martin (Independence/Independence) gave up just one hit over the final 1.1 innings for his third win of the year.

In the opener, Mount Union hurler Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) pitched his second straight complete game victory with a career-best 10 strikeouts as he pushed his record to 7-0 on the season in the 1-0 win.

The game's lone run came in the sixth when Spellman reached on a two-out single, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley).

Mount Union hosts #25 LaRoche (Pa.) in a non-conference game Monday, April 17 at 4 p.m. at 23rd Street Field.
