Baseball: Mount Union Rallies To Sweep Heidelberg; Raiders Stay in First in OAC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team rallied from a 6-1 deficit in game two to win 7-6 and sweep Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday at 23rd Street Field.

The Purple Raiders held on to win the opener 7-6 and have now won 10 of their last 11 games to be 15-4 overall and in first place in the conference with a 5-1 record.

On the day, junior centerfielder Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) and senior second baseman Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) each had four hits on the day while Goodall, senior left fielder Kyle Spellman (Ravenna/Ravenna) and junior designated hitter Joey Keleman (North Olmsted/North Olmsted) each drove in three runs.

The opener featured a battle of two of the conference's top pitchers in Mount Union's Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Heidelberg's Anthony Hajdu.

Mary went 8.0 innings, struck out five and allowed just one earned run as he moved to 5-0 on the season while Hajdu gave up three runs in 4.1 innings to fall to 5-1 on the season.

The Berg took a 1-0 lead as they scored an unearned run in the fourth on a two-out single from Cory Jacobs.

Mount Union got on the board with a three-run fifth inning after starting the inning with three straight singles from Conner Koski (Mayfield Hts/Mayfield), Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and Piotrowski then all three came home on sacrifice flies from Goodall and Spellman along with a bases loaded walk to Keleman.

The Raiders then added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh taking advantage of an error, a hit batter and two walks to plate two more runs to make it 5-1.

In the eighth, Mount Union scored two more runs as two more walks both came around to score on an RBI single from Owen and a fielder's choice RBI from Goodall extended the lead to 7-1.

Mary came out of the game after hitting the first batter of the ninth inning but then the Berg rallied with five runs and had the tying run on third base before Nick Satovich (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) – the third pitcher of the inning – closed it out for his first save.

In game two, Heidelberg ran out to a 6-1 lead but the Raiders began the rally with a three-run sixth inning. Piotrowski led off the inning with a triple, Goodall drove him in with a single then he came home on a double from Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's). Scott later came home on a single from Spellman and Mount Union cut the deficit to 6-4.

The Raiders got it to 6-5 in the eighth as Spellman had a one-out single and scored on a wild pitch.

In the ninth, Piotrowski led off the inning on a walk, was sacrificed to second by Goodall, got to third on a wild pitch then scored on an RBI double from Keleman to tie the game. Mount Union then loaded the bases and the second wild pitch of the inning brought Jimmy Scott home from third with the game winner.

Senior hurler Beau Taylor (Alliance/West Branch) picked up his first win of the season as he came in out of the bullpen, got the final out of the third inning and allowed just a run on three hits over the final 6.1 innings.

Mount Union stays home to host Hiram in a non-conference game Wednesday, April 5 at 4 p.m. in Alliance.
