Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio – Top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 24 Mount Union beat fourth-seeded John Carroll 5-0 in the opening game of the 2017 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
Mount Union, now 30-9 on the season, will play the winner of a game between second seeded Marietta and third seeded Otterbein Friday at 9:30 a.m. while John Carroll plays in an elimination game Friday at 12:30 p.m.
Sophomore pitcher Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) carried his strong season into the post-season as he threw a complete game four hitter striking out eight to move to 10-0 on the season for the Raiders.
At the plate, junior center fielder Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) went 3-for-4 and drove in a run to lead a Mount Union offense that belted out 12 hits.
Mount Union loaded the bases in the second inning and Conner Koski (Mayfield Hts/Mayfield) drew a walk to bring a run in.
Three straight hits in the sixth got the Raiders another run as Nick Satovich (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and later in the inning Travis Wood (Hudson/Hudson) had a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 3-0.
Mount Union tacked on two more runs in the seventh as Goodall had an RBI single and Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) had a sacrifice fly.
Fred Moore gave up three runs on eight hits over 6.0 innings to take the loss for John Carroll.
