Football: #1 Mount Union goes to career day at Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Career days from quarterback D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla.) and running back Josh Petruccelli (Perry) led top ranked Mount Union to a 77-3 win at Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus.

Fulford threw a career-high six touchdown passes – five in the first half – as he was 14-of-16 for 276 yards while Petruccelli had a career-best 140 yards on the ground with two scores.

Three of Fulford's touchdown passes were to Jared Ruth (Indianapolis, Ind. / Pike) as he had six catches for 124 yards as the Raider offense cranked out 563 yards.

The Purple Raiders pushed the nation's longest win streak to 21 games and are now 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the OAC while Capital remains winless at 0-6, 0-5 OAC.

Fulford threw touchdown passes on each of the Raiders first three possessions – 45 yards to Ruth, 50 to Justin Hill (Circleville) and five to Evan Weygandt (New Lenox, Ill. / Lincoln-Way West) to stake Mount Union out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Then the defense got into the act as the Raiders forced a Capital fumble on the Mount one-yard line then nabbed a pair of Capital interceptions on successive passing attempts – the first of those brought back 55 yards by Louis Berry (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shady Side Academy) for a score and the second took back 33 yards by Trevor Cox (Hilliard / Darby) to the Crusaders four-yard line and one play later Petruccelli ran in it to push the lead to 35-0.

Fulford finished the half with two more touchdown passes – another 45 yarder to Ruth and three yards to Luke Herrington (Wintersville / Steubenville) and it was 49-0 at halftime.

Fulford threw his sixth touchdown pass of the day on the opening drive of second half as he hit Ruth for a third time in the end zone this time from two yards out and it was 56-0.

Capital got on the board with a 26-yard field goal to bring the score to 56-3 with 8:36 left in the third quarter.

Mount Union finished the scoring with fourth quarter rushing touchdowns from Ernie Burkes (New Castle, Pa. / Neshannock) and Christian Miller (Middlebury, Ind. / Northridge) along with a 41-yard interception return by Skyler Scott (Carroll / Canal Winchester).

Raider placekicker Cory Barnett (Grove City / Teays Valley) set a Mount Union single-game record with 11 extra points.

Mount Union returns home to host Heidelberg next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
