Baseball: Long Ball Hurts Mount Union at No. 14 Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team was defeated by a final score of 17-9 against No. 14 Wooster Sunday afternoon at Art Murray Field.

The Purple Raiders (0-1) were led by junior Scott Cooney (North Olmsted) who went 2-for-4 with four RBI's on a grand slam and a double. Junior Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) picked up his first loss since 2016 giving up eight hits with 7 runs, six of them earned.

Wooster (1-0) was led by Dan Harwood who was 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI's. The winning pitcher for the Scots was Nanak Saran who threw five innings while giving up five hits and two runs.

The Fighting Scots came out swinging in the first as they put up three runs in the first off of Mary. A two-run double by Drew Tornow started the scoring for the Scots before he scored on a Garrett Crum single.

The Raiders answered quickly in the top half of the second inning scoring two runs of their own. Joey Keleman (North Olmsted) got the inning started with a single before a Cooney double put two Raiders in scoring position in which catcher Travis Wood (Hudson) scored Keleman on a fielder's choice to third. Bryant Kennedy (Chagrin Falls) knocked a single to score Cooney and make the score 3-2.

The Scots extended their lead to 5-2 off two-run home run from Dan Harwood; his first home run of two in the game.

A grand slam in the fourth inning by Connor Thomson blew the game open for the Scots as the Raiders could not come back from a 10-2 deficit after the inning. The scoring continued from the Scots as they poured on three more runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Mount Union made a late push scoring three runs in the eighth off a two run home run from Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) and a groundout from Collin Scott (Richmond/Edison) scored Keleman. Collin Scott added to his RBI total with a grand slam in the ninth to end the scoring for the Raiders.

The Raiders will travel down to Florida for their annual spring trip where they will play 10 games starting on Friday against Hanover.
