Baseball: Mount Union Ends Spring Trip with a Win; Taylor Shuts Down Eagle Offense

Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Mount Union's baseball team will come back to Alliance as they end their spring trip with a 5-4 win over Brockport State (NY)Saturday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Florida.

Senior reliever Beau Taylor (Alliance/West Branch) came on in relief of starter Mike Martin (Independence) to get the win as he threw four scoreless innings while giving up just one hit. Martin gave up eight hits and four runs, three of them earned.

The Raider offense was led by senior center fielder Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) as he went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with a walk and two runs batted in.

Mark Giallazo gets the loss for the Eagles as he drops to 1-1 on the year. He gave up eight hits and five runs, four of them earned.

The Eagles were led by Avery Brooks as he was 4-for-5 on the afternoon with two doubles and two singles.

Mount Union jumped on the Golden Eagles early as the Raiders tagged Giallazo for three runs in the first. Nate Owen (Cranberry, Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) led off the game with a single and came around to score on a Goodall single up the middle. After a Charlie Lewis (Strongsville) single to put runners at first and second, senior shortstop Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. Johns) ripped a triple into the right-centerfield gap to score both runners.

After 1.5 scoreless innings, Brockport scored three runs as they attacked Martin early in the count. The Golden Eagles hit three straight pitches for doubles as they scored three times to tie the game at three in the bottom of the third.

The Raiders would answer in the top of the fourth as Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) reached on an error and came around to score on an Owen single through the left side to make the score 4-3. The Eagles would quickly knot the game back up at four in the fifth when Brooks scored on a groundout from Anthony Eaton.

What ended up being the winning run for the Raiders happened in the seventh inning as Owen was hit by a pitch, Christian Stanziano (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) singled and Goodall hit a fielder's choice that scored Owen from third.

Taylor gave up his only hit in the bottom of the ninth as he was lights out out of the 'pen for the Raiders.

Mount Union will come back to Ohio with an 8-2 record and will be back in action on Thursday, March 15 as they have a doubleheader at LaRoche (Pa.) with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
