Baseball: Raiders Get Great Pitching and Clutch Hitting in Sweep of Otterbein

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team got a pair of wins on two complete game pitching victories in the Ohio Athletic Conference and home opener as they defeated Otterbein 5-1 and 3-0 on Sunday at 23rd Street Field.

The Purple Raiders advance to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the OAC on the year while Otterbein drops to 10-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Game one saw junior Phil Mary (3-2) (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) throw a complete game and get the win as he had nine strikeouts while giving up just one run and five hits.

Senior Billy Goodall (South Range/Canfield) led the Raider offense with a double and a single and two runs scored.

The Raiders jumped on Otterbein starter Craig Prince (2-2) in the first as Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) scored Goodall on a single through the left side. Mary shut the door on the Cardinal offense as he was perfect through his first 3.2 innings and kept Otterbein off the scoreboard until the sixth.

Otterbein tagged Mary for their only run in the sixth when Luke Barber singled through the left side to score Ben Beachy. Mount Union would answer in the bottom half of the sixth as junior Scott Cooney (North Olmsted) ripped a two-run double that scored Bryant Kennedy (Chagrin Falls) and Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) to put the Raiders up 3-1. Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa/Seneca Valley) then hit a single through the left side that scored Cooney.

Goodall would score the last run in the seventh for the Raiders on a wild pitch that made the score 5-1.

Game two saw both starters keep the opposing offenses off the board through the first three innings.

Noah Skladan (Amherst/Amherst Steele) backed up Mary's complete game with one of his own as he gave up just four hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Stevie Yuran falls to 1-2 for the Cardinals on the bump as he threw five innings giving up three runs but just one earned.

Mount Union got a run in the bottom half of the fourth off a Kennedy single to left that scored Goodall.

The Raiders tacked on two more in the fifth after an Otterbein error kept the inning alive and Goodall shot a double down the right field line that scored Joey Keleman (North Olmsted) and Scott scored Goodall with a single up the middle to make the score 3-0 through five innings.

That would be all the Raiders would need as Skladan continued his dominance on the mound.

Seven of the eight Mount Union runs came with two outs on the day.

Mount Union will be back in action this Friday, March 30th as they travel to Baldwin Wallace for an OAC series with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
