Baseball: Raiders Drop High-Scoring Game against Rhode Island

LAKELAND, Fla. – Mount Union's baseball team was beaten by Rhode Island College (5-4) by a final score of 10-9 Thursday afternoon at Henley Field in Lakeland, Florida.

The loss snapped a seven game win streak for the Purple Raiders (7-2). Charlie Lewis (Strongsville/Strongsville) reached base in all four appearances at the plate which included a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Senior Darren Krolikowski (Independence) started on the mound for Mount Union and allowed four earned runs in four and a third innings of work. Trevor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny), Beau Taylor (Alliance/West Branch) and Mike Martin (Independence) all came in in relief as Martin picked up the loss and goes to 1-1 on the year.

Josh Silva hit in the game-winning RBI as he went 2-for-6 on the afternoon. Tyler Walsh had a homerun and a double on the afternoon along with four RBI's. Christian Sanchez earned the win in relief for the Anchormen as he goes to 1-0 on the year.

The game opened up with the Anchormen jumping on Krolikowski as Walsh hit a three-run home run to put the Anchormen up 3-0.

The Raiders could not get on the board until the third inning when senior Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) ripped a triple into the right-center gap that scored Christian Stanziano (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic). Rhode Island got two more in the fifth inning led by a triple by Tyler Rains.

Mount Union answered those two runs by Rhode Island when Lewis came up and hit a pinch-hit two-run homerun to make the score 5-3.

After a 1-2-3 sixth inning from Smith, the Raiders took the lead after they scored four runs in the bottom half. The scoring started when Neil Hutchison (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) got home on a Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) stolen base. Lewis got his second hit of the day with a single up the middle that scored Goodall and Stanziano while Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) ended the scoring with an RBI single in the to left field.

The Raiders took a 9-5 lead in the seventh when Stanziano singled in Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) and Lewis came up with his third hit of the day that scored Stanziano for his fifth RBI of the game.

Rhode Island would not go away as they scored three times in the eighth and two times in the ninth to take a 10-9 lead.

The Raiders got some traffic on the base paths in the ninth as Lewis got on base for the fourth time with a walk and was pinch-ran for by Nate Emerson (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area). After a Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) walk, Angelo Cruz (Lorain/Elyria Catholic) ripped a single into left field then Emerson, the tying run, was thrown out at home plate for the last out of the game.

Mount Union concludes its spring trip Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with a nine-inning game against Brockport St. (N.Y.) at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Fla.
