Baseball: Mount Union Splits With John Carroll

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with John Carroll as they won the first game 4-0 and lost game two 6-0 at Richard Coppola Field at Austintown-Fitch High School.

With the split, Mount Union goes to 15-11 overall and 6-6 in the OAC while John Carroll goes to 16-11 and 7-5 in the conference.

Game one saw Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) throw a complete game as he faced just two batters over the minimum of 27. Mary now goes to 4-3 on the year as he had eight strikeouts and allowed just four hits.

Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) and Ray Belchick (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) each had three hits in game one for the Raiders.

The game started as a pitcher's duel as Mary and John Carroll starter, Steven Virost (4-3), put zero's on the scoreboard for the first three innings.

The Purple Raider offense scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning. Belchick got his second hit of the day that scored Ryan Boyd (Wooster) on a single up the middle to get the first run of the game for the Raiders. Freshman Joe Nave (Toronto/Edison) then made his first collegiate hit count as he scorched a three-run homerun to left-centerfield that scored Belchick and Travis Wood (Hudson).

Mary shut the Blue Streak offense down the rest of the way as they did not have a runner get to second in the game.

Game two was another pitcher's duel, this time between Noah Skladan (4-3) (Amherst/Steele) and Fred Moore (4-1) of John Carroll.

John Carroll got on the board in the second as Skladan was called for a balk that scored a run. They scored again in the fifth when they knocked Skladan for three hits in the inning to make the score 2-0.

The Blue Streaks added insurance as they scored four runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach led by a Dominic Mittiga double that scored three runs.

The Raider offense could not get going off of Moore or Cameron Mayle as the two combined to scatter seven Raider hits by seven different players.

The Raiders will be back in action this Saturday with the first pitch coming at 1 p.m. at 23rd Street Field against another OAC foe in Wilmington.
