Baseball: Mount Union Gets the Sweep of Wilmington at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team got the sweep of Ohio Athletic Conference foe, Wilmington, with scores of 1-0 and 10-8 Monday at 23rd Street Field.

Mount Union advances to 18-11 overall and 8-6 in the OAC while Wilmington falls to 9-23 overall and 1-13 in the conference

Game one saw Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) (5-3) earn his second consecutive complete game shutout as he struck out 11 Quakers on the afternoon. The Quakers stranded eight runners on base as Mary scattered six hits throughout the game

Joey Hollback of Wilmington almost matched Mary pitch-for-pitch as he also threw a complete game giving up just the one run on six Raider hits.

The one run came in the second inning when Travis Wood (Hudson) hit a double down the right field line and then scored on a single from Ray Belchick (North Huntingdon/Norwin).

Mary got out of a bases loaded, nobody out, jam in the third unscathed as he got a strikeout and a double play ball to get out of it.

Another double play ended the game for the Raiders as they hung on to the 1-0 win.

Game two saw an offensive explosion as Mount Union had 17 hits led by sophomore Ryan Boyd (Wooster) going 4-for-5 with six runs batted in.

Noah Skladan (Amherst/Steele) goes to 5-2 on the year as he went six innings giving up four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Trevor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) came in relief of Skladan as he got two innings of work and Beau Taylor (Alliance/West Branch) came in for the final three outs for the Raiders.

Mount Union jumped on the board in the first as Boyd got his first hit of the game that brought in Nathan Duliba (Berea/Berea-Midpark) and Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp. Pa./Seneca Valley) to put the Raiders up 2-0.

Wilmington would answer with two runs in the third off a Gage Bley homerun to knot the game at 2-2.

In the bottom half of the third, Boyd got his second hit of the game and third RBI when Shawn Baker (Uniontown/Lake) came into score to make the score 3-2. Later in the inning, a Joe Nave (Toronto/Edison) infield single scored Boyd and made the score 4-2.

A homerun from Luke Kleindl in the top of the fourth made the score 4-3 before Boyd struck again in the bottom half.

Boyd rocked a double to right center for his third hit that scored Goodall and Joey Keleman easily and made the score 6-3.

No lead was comfortable for the Raiders as Wilmington battled back with two runs in the seventh as they took advantage of a Raider error to make the score 7-6.

Mount Union got some much needed insurance runs in the seventh from a Nate Owen single to make the score 8-6. The Raiders then scored twice in the eighth off another Ryan Boyd double that scored Baker and a wild pitch that scored Angelo Cruz (Lorain/Elyria Catholic) to make the score 10-6.

Wilmington scored twice in the ninth but the four run lead was sufficient for the Raiders as Taylor held up the 10-8 lead.

Mount Union will be back in action with a single game against Hiram at 23rd Street Field Thursday, April 26th with the first pitch coming at 4 p.m.
