Baseball: Mount Union Gets Swept by Ohio Northern; Stanziano Sets School Hit Streak Record in Game One

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team got swept by Ohio Northern in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with scores of 15-4 and 9-4 Sunday at 23rd Street Field.

Game one saw senior Christian Stanziano (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) extend his hitting streak to 20 games which set a new school record.

Mount Union got on the board in the first when Stanziano scored on a wild pitch to put the Raiders up 1-0.

Ohio Northern tied the game up at 1-1 in the fourth on a Phil Buckingham single and then proceeded to score two more in the fifth to take the lead 3-1 when they scored two runs on a passed ball.

The Polar Bears proceeded to score four runs in the seventh and six runs in the eighth to put them up 13-1 and put the game out of reach for the Raiders.

Phil Mary gets the loss as he drops to 3-3 as he went six and two thirds innings giving up seven runs, five of them earned, with 10 hits and eight strikeouts.

Austin Frey gets the win for the Polar Bears (5-0) as he went seven innings giving up seven hits and three runs.

Game two saw Noah Skladan (Amherst/Steele) pick up his first loss of the season as he went five and a third innings giving up six runs, four of them earned, with six strikeouts.

Josh Mohr got the win for the Polar Bears and goes to 3-1 on the year while Scott Beaton got his first save of the year. Mohr went six innings giving up four runs, two earned, and seven hits. Beaton went the last three innings without allowing a hit for the Bears.

The Raiders got another early 1-0 lead when Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) scored on a sacrifice fly from Jake Smith (Salem/West Branch) in the second inning.

Ohio Northern would capture the lead in the fourth as they scored two runs on a Caleb Thomas home run and scored again on a double play later in the inning.

Mount Union answered with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth as Smith singles to score Ryan Boyd (Wooster) and Niklas Kuriger (Atco, N.J./Winslow Township) scored Bryant Kennedy (Chagrin Falls) on a sacrifice fly. Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) ended the scoring as he drove in Smith to make the score 4-2.

Ohio Northern took the lead with four runs in the sixth as they took advantage of a Raider error as they only had two hits in the inning.

The Polar Bears added insurance runs in the seventh inning and the ninth as Beaton shut the door on the Raider offense the rest of the way.

Next up for the Raiders is a doubleheader with Marietta on Tuesday with the first pitch coming at 1 p.m. at 23rd Street Field.
