Baseball: Mount Union Splits Doubleheader With Washington and Jefferson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Washington and Jefferson, winning the first game 7-6 and dropping the second 11-4, Tuesday at 23rd Street Field.

With the split, Mount Union goes to 20-15 overall while W&J moves on to 24-13-1.

Senior Joey Keleman (North Olmsted) led the Raider offense on the day as he went 4-for-5 with four runs batted in.

Game one saw both offenses come out swinging as there were seven combined runs in the first inning.

W&J jumped on Mount Union starting pitcher Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) as they scored five runs in the first inning on five hits led by a two-run triple by Dante Dalesandro.

The Mount Union offense would answer quickly as a two-run homerun from Keleman made the score 5-2 after the first inning.

Satovich would settle down to earn his second win of the year and go to 2-2 as he gave up just one more run which came in the fourth inning.

With the score 6-2 after three and a half innings, the Raider offense would explode for five runs to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Keleman and Ryan Boyd (Wooster) led off the inning with singles and both came around on a Bryant Kennedy (Chagrin Falls) single to make the score 6-4. Later in the inning a Joe Nave (Toronto/Edison) single scored Kennedy to make it 6-5 before Nathan Duliba's (Berea/Berea-Midpark) two-run single that scored Angelo Cruz (Lorain/Elyria Catholic) and Nave gave the Raiders the lead at 7-6.

Satovich kept the Presidents off the board and senior Beau Taylor (Alliance/West Branch) came in to get his fourth save of the year.

Game two saw freshman Carson Davis (Louisville) get his first career start where he got the loss and pitched three-plus innings giving up four runs, three earned.

Both pitchers kept the game scoreless through the first two innings but a three run third inning led by a two-run single from Ryan Sciullo put the Presidents up 3-0.

Mount Union would come back with a run in the bottom half as Keleman scored Niklas Kuriger (Atco, N.J./Winslow Township) on his first hit of the second game.

After W&J scored one run in both the fourth and fifth to make the score 5-1, the Raiders kept the game close with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Keleman jumped on the first pitch of his at-bat and ripped another single up the middle that scored Cruz and Charlie Lewis (Strongsville) got a pinch-hit single that scored Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) to make the score 5-3.

The Raiders could not keep the Presidents off the board as they added two runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh while the Raiders scored one more in the sixth.

Mount Union will be back in action on Saturday, May 5th for senior night against Muskingum with the first pitch coming at 1 p.m. at 23rd Street Field. The ceremony for the 12 seniors will be after game two.
