Baseball: Raiders Drop Doubleheader to Seahawks

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Mount Union's baseball team was defeated 14-6 and 12-7 in doubleheader action against Salve Regina (R.I.) Thursday at Lake Myrtle Park. 

The Purple Raiders, now 7-3 overall, did belt out a combined 25 hits over the two games. Joey Nave (Toronto / Edison) had a combined four hits, Corey White (Louisville) and Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa. / Seneca Valley) had three hits to headline the offense.

In game one, Mount Union scored three runs in the top of the first, two coming on a double from White but the Seahawks retaliated scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning. 

Mount Union made it 4-2 in the third on a fielders choice RBI from Bryant Kennedy (Chagrin Falls). Salve Regina blew the game open with a nine-run fifth inning to take a commanding 11-4 lead.

Niklas Kuriger (Atco, N.J. / Winslow Twp.) and Billy Goodall (Canfield / South Range) each drove in two more runs and the Seahawks tacked on three more for the 14-6 final.

Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa. / Plum) struck out two batters over 4.1 innings of work and took the loss for the Raiders.

In game two, Mount Union again grabbed an early lead with two runs in the first inning this time Goodall came home pn a wide thow after stealing third and Satovich had an RBI double.

Also just like the opener, Salve Regina responded this time with a three-run second to take the lead. Mount Union got one of those back in the bottom of the inning off a Scott Cooney (North Olmsted) sacrifice fly.

The Seahawks got four more runs in the fourth to take an 8-3 lead before Mount Union rallied with a two-RBI single from Kennedy to make it 8-5 in the fifth.

Another four-run inning from Salve Regina, this time in the sixth made it 12-5.

Mount Union got two runs in the seventh on singles from Nave and Chad Sydlowski (Twinsburg) but the rally stopped there with the 12-7 final.

Freshman Billy Keller (Medina / Highland) made his collegiate debut going 3.2 innings, striking out two batters and taking the loss. 

Mount Union wraps up the spring trip Saturday against Knox (Ill.) in a 1:15 p.m. doubleheader at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee.
