Baseball: Raiders Split with Baldwin Wallace in Home Opener

ALLIANCE, Ohio --Mount Union's baseball team salvaged a split after dropping the first game 4-2 and taking the nightcap 10-6 in Ohio Athletic Conference action Tuesday at 23rd Street Field. 

The Purple Raiders are now 13-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play as Baldwin Wallace moves to 12-7 and 2-2 in the conference. 

Billy Goodall (Canfield / South Range) had three hits in game one while Corey White (Louisville) and Jake Smith (Salem / West Branch) each registered two hits in the game two victory.

Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) fanned six batters only allowing five hits through 5.1 innings of work as Billy Keller (Medina / Highland) went 2.2 innings allowing three hits for the loss.

Baldwin Wallace got on the board first in game one with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Union tied the game in the bottom frame as White hit an RBI single.

Goodall belted a solo homer in the third to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead.

The Yellow Jackets regained control of the game scoring two runs in the eighth and a single run in the ninth to go on to the 4-2 victory.

In game two, Baldwin Wallace again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame before the Raiders plated three runs in the second sparked by RBI singles from Joey Nave (Toronto / Edison) and Goodall to take a 3-1 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets scored one in the fifth before Bryant Kennedy (Chagrin Falls) singled that allowed Niklas Kuriger (Atco, N.J. / Winslow Township) to score in the bottom half to make the score 4-2.

Baldwin Wallace plated three runs in the seventh to take control of the game at 6-4.

The Raiders cut the lead to one off a passed ball in the seventh before blowing the game open scoring five runs in the eighth highlighted by a two-RBI double from White to go on to the 10-6 victory.

Carson Davis (Louisville) pitched the first 6.0 innings for the Raiders striking out five batters while Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa. / Plum) came in to pitch the final two innings, striking out one in line for the win.

Mount Union returns to the diamond Wednesday, April 2 for a single game contest against Pitt-Greensburg starting at 3 p.m. at 23rd Street Field.
