TIFFIN, Ohio – No. 4 ranked Mount Union scored a 49-14 win against Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference football game Saturday at Hornemann Stadium.
Mount Union (7-0, 6-0 OAC) got a season-high 500 passing yards from quarterback
Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla.), who was 37-of-47 passing with three touchdowns.
Three Raider receivers went over 100 yards as
Jaden Manley (Columbus / Bishop Hartley) had 110 yards on five catches, Ulice Gillard (Orlando, Fla. / Lake Nona) had 104 yards on eight catches with a touchdown and
Wayne Ruby, Jr. (Miami, Fla. / Flanagan) had nine catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
Running backs
Josh Petruccelli (Perry) and
DeAndre Parker (Crystal River, Fla.) each ran for two touchdowns. Parker had 69 yards on 13 carries and Petruccelli had 47 yards on 11 carries.
The defense held the Heidelberg offense to 135 yards in the second half and 313 total yards as linebacker
Mason McMillen (Wadsworth) had 16 tackles and half a sack.
Heidelberg (4-2, 4-2 OAC) quarterback
Drew Sims threw for two touchdowns on 271 yards passing.
Heidelberg was forced to punt on its first possession before Mount Union turned it over with a fumble on third down giving the Student Princes back the ball on the Raider 19-yard line. On the very next play, Sims hit Brandon Reed on a touchdown pass to give Heidelberg a 7-0 lead.
Mount Union tied the game on a 93-yard, eight-play drive as Plunk hit Ruby on an eight-yard pass with 5:48 left in the first quarter.
After the Raiders forced a three-and-out, Mount Union took its first lead of the day as Plunk threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Gillard and it was 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Heidelberg answered with a pair of long passes of its own in the first drive of the second quarter as Sims found Matthews from 40 yards out and the Student Princes tied the game at 14.
The Mount Union defense came up with two stops and the offense grinded out a pair of scoring drives --- as Parker and Petruccelli both punched in touchdowns from three and two yards out respectively and the Raiders led 28-14 with 2:14 left.
Mount Union got the ball back one more time before halftime and Plunk moved the offense 67 yards in 19 seconds and threw his third TD pass of the day – a 15-yarder to Ruby and Raiders made it 35-14 at the half.
Neither team scores in the third quarter as Mount Union threw a pair of interceptions and Heidelberg had an interception and a turnover on downs throwing a ball into the Raider end zone.
Petruccelli and Parker each ran in scores in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring.
Mount Union returns home to host Ohio Northern next Saturday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
