ADA, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team, ranked 17
th in the nation, won an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup against Ohio Northern 72-56 on Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (7-1, 2-1 OAC) were led by three double digit scorers, with sophomore
Christian Parker (Canton / Glenoak) leading the way with a 24-point, 10 rebound double-double on 11-of-13 shooting. Senior
Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon / Jackson) added 19 points and junior
Chris Painter Jr. (Akron / St. Vincent-St. Mary) added in 12.
The Polar Bears (5-3, 1-2 OAC) were led by Brandon Waugh who scored a team high 15 points.
After a back and forth first five minutes the Raiders and Polar Bears were tied at 11-11, then a Stanislawski layup sparked a 7-0 run over the next 2:09 to give the Raiders an 18-11 lead with 12:42 left in the first half. The Raiders were able to stretch their lead to 10 off a three pointer by senior
Julian Berry (Girard) with 4:59 to go in the half. With 14 seconds left in the half Waugh split a pair of free throws to cut the Raiders lead to eight, which gave the Raiders a 33-25 lead going into the half.
The Raiders and Polar Bears traded baskets to start the second half before a pair of Waugh free throws cut the Raiders lead to five with 16:53 remaining in the game. A three by senior
Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) and a Painter jump shot stretched the Raiders lead back out to 10 with 14:30 left. The Polar Bears then chipped away at the Raiders lead over the next four minutes and were able to cut it to two with 10:38 remaining in the game. The Raiders outscored the Polar Bears 21-7 over the final 10 minutes of the game to close out a 16-point victory.
Mount Union's bench outscored Ohio Northern's bench 30-7.
The Raiders return to action Friday, December 17 at 2 p.m. in Wilmington, Ohio to take on Wilmington in an OAC matchup.
