Newsom's Career Night Leads #17 Raiders to Victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team, ranked 17th in the nation, picked up a 93-83 Ohio Athletic Conference victory at John Carroll  Wednesday night at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The Purple Raiders (6-1, 1-1 OAC) had four players score in double figures as senior Darrell Newsom (Twinsburg) lead the way hiting five three-pointers and scoring a career-high 29 points.

Senior Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon / Jackson) added 19, senior Braedon Poole (McDonald) had 18 and junior Chris Painter Jr. (Akron / St. Vincent – St. Mary) put in 17 points as Mount Union's other double digit scorers.

Stanislawski hit two free throws with 11:06 remaining in the game to reach 1,000 points in his college career. He scored 765 points in two years at Ohio Wesleyan.

The Blue Streaks (5-2, 1-1 OAC) were led by Chase Toppin who scored a team high 21 points and Jackson Sartain added 18.

After a back and forth first nine and half minutes, a Newsom bucket and one sparked a 10-3 run over the next two minutes for the Raiders which gave them a 30-20 lead with 9:31 remaining in the first half.

John Carroll answered with a 15-2 run over the next 5:08 to take a 35-32 lead with 4:23 to go in the half. The Raiders and Blue Streaks then traded baskets over the final 4:23 of the half, until a Stanislawski jumper with 15 seconds left gave the Raiders a 45-44 lead heading into halftime.

The Raiders opened the second half scoring eight of the first 10 points to take a 53-46 lead with 17:15 remaining in the game. The Blue streaks answered with a three to cut the lead down to four, but then a layup by Newsom sparked a 13-5 run over the next 3:27 that stretched the Raiders lead to 12 with 13:41 remaining.

Mount Union then put the game away with a 10-0 run over the next 2:21 to stretch the lead out to 20 points with just over 11 minutes left in the game. John Carroll cut the lead to 11 but got no closer until the 10 point final margin.

The Raiders had 17 steals and forced 24 John Carroll turnovers.

The Raiders return to action on Saturday, December 11 at 4 p.m. against Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio.
